Salomon
is a runner who started at school and continued to run all through his adult life. He has completed all lengths of races from 5k to ultra marathon. He has also trained other runners and is a coach to under 11's at Hastings Athletics Club.
Kay
started off at school running on track and cross country, but stopped until marrying Salomon when she began again. Now with two children who also run, Kay's interests are in keeping her running family healthily fed and refuelled, and keeping fit through starting running again.

Read below for advice on race preparation and race day plus advice for supporters. There is also great suggestions for those spouses who miss their other half during the hours of training for marathons and more.
But why not have a look in our Amazon store for some heart rate monitors or training machines!
Great gadgets for the eager runner.
Preparation
I listened to the story of a friend the other day after he had run a race in a foreign country. He had got lost on the way to registration and had been so late arriving that he had only been able to pick up his race number and not his goody bag. That was to have implications for his race.
On the day of the race he had no baggage ticket to leave his overnight bag in the storage facility, as that was in the goody bag. So, he had to run with his overnight bag on his back which slowed him down.
With a little better map of the city he was in, more time before the race day to get there and settle in, a good map or satnav, would have helped him be more comfortable.

Planning
When Salomon finally got a place in the London Marathon, we realised quite early on that we would need to go to London for at least two days. Registration was Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and the race was Sunday morning. We live about 90 minutes from London but knew we would have trouble parking, and driving, near to the Marathon start on the Sunday. Therefore, we booked a hotel on the London underground route close to a station.
Supporters
On the day, having turned down a Grandstand seat, the children and I got on the London Underground to travel and find a space where we could look for Salomon. We eventually found a place. We waited and looked ........and we waited and looked. My daughter saw a quick glimpse, and my son and I........ saw nothing. We thought we would go further on the course and see him. Everywhere we went the
trains
were packed so full that it was difficult to get on a train and we could not get near any of the barriers.

In the end we went and sat on the grass in the park where the marathon ends........ and waited until Salomon had finished the marathon. How I rued giving up that Grandstand seat
where I would have seen every runner coming in, and my dear husband as he finished, too. And of course, we would not be weary from trailing round a busy city. There was even a big screen in the park where I maybe would have seen him as he ran.
However, it was wonderful to get back to a hotel
and to relax together after a busy day, followed by a meal, hot bath, and bed, all in one spot.

So why am I telling you this?
That is the key to stress free running and supporting.
Several years ago, when our daughter was a baby, Salomon decided to train and take part in the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon. As he outlined the plans he had for his training, I realised that I had to buy in to that training or I could end up feeling left out and fed up. It was going to be all encompassing for three months and I knew that I would resent the time he spent running unless I made a decision to be part of it.
We decided that on his 2 to 3 hour run on a Saturday morning, I would get in the car with breakfast, books and toys for me and our daughter, and drinks for Salomon. Then we would stake out places where Salomon could stop to drink and we could eat breakfast and play, and then, pop along to the next stop. Instead of being left out we became an integral part of the race preparation. I began to research the foods and meals that would make a difference and help Salomon to cope with the training and race. It was fun and we saw many beautiful sunrises and soft lovely early mornings as Salomon ran. That was when I discovered my passion to feed him healthily for races and for recovery. These days this also includes learning to feed our children for sports, too.
